Why Riverside is practically on our doorstep

Of everywhere we see patients travel from, Riverside is about as close as it gets without actually being in the city centre itself. Cross the Taff near Fitzhamon Embankment, walk past the stadium, and you're already within a few minutes of Queen Street — a route so straightforward that distance genuinely isn't the reason most Riverside residents choose us.

What tends to matter more is the mix of flexibility and reliability: appointments that can be booked in the evening or at the weekend, without the months-long wait that's become common for NHS dental care across Cardiff. Riverside's genuinely diverse community — long-established families, newer arrivals from all over the world, students in shared houses near the market — means we see an unusually broad range of patients from a fairly small area, united mostly by wanting to be seen quickly and treated properly.

Riverside Market's Sunday crowd has also become an unlikely source of new patients over the years — plenty of people mention finding us after noticing St David's Centre was just a short walk over the river from wherever they'd parked or stopped for the market.

Getting here from Riverside

From most of Riverside, the drive into the city centre is short enough that some patients question whether it's worth taking the car at all. Head towards Cardiff Bridge or Fitzhamon Embankment, cross the Taff, and pass the Principality Stadium before joining the one-way system that leads towards Queen Street and St David's Shopping Centre — typically no more than 6 minutes in normal traffic.

The obvious exception is match days, when road closures around the stadium can add a noticeable detour to what would otherwise be a two-minute crossing. If the Principality Stadium has an event on, it's worth checking the road closure map before setting off, or simply walking instead, since Riverside sits close enough that walking is rarely much slower than driving around a closure.

Once you're near Queen Street, the practice is on the first floor of Boots inside St David's Shopping Centre — easy to find from the main Queen Street entrance.

On foot, by bike, bus or train

Riverside is genuinely walkable into the city centre — from Wells Street or the area around the market, it's often no more than 15 minutes on foot via Fitzhamon Embankment and across the river towards the stadium and Queen Street. A good proportion of our Riverside patients simply walk in rather than considering any other option.

For those who'd rather not walk, buses along Cowbridge Road East run into the centre regularly, and Nextbike stations are within easy reach for a short cycle over the river. Cardiff Central station is also only a short walk from the Riverside side of the Taff, useful if you're combining your appointment with a longer trip elsewhere, and Cardiff Queen Street station sits a few minutes further on, right by the practice itself.

The Taff Trail runs directly through this stretch of the city, linking Riverside to the stadium and city centre on a dedicated path — a genuinely pleasant walk or cycle in dry weather, and one that avoids road traffic almost entirely.

No free parking at the practice — given how close Riverside is, most patients walk, cycle or take the bus, though the Queen Street, St David's, and John Lewis car parks are all a short walk away if you do drive.

Your first visit

A first visit for a Riverside patient starts the same way it does for anyone else — a thorough examination, X-rays where they're useful, and a plain conversation about what we've found and what it would involve to fix, with costs made clear before any treatment is agreed.

Because Riverside is so close, we often see patients who've popped in almost on a whim after walking past St David's Centre — sometimes with a niggling issue they'd been meaning to sort out for a while. We're happy to see people at that stage too, even if it's simply to have a look and reassure someone that nothing urgent needs doing yet.

If you're planning to combine a market trip with a dental appointment, it's worth allowing a little extra time on a busy Sunday, since both the market and Queen Street tend to be at their most crowded around midday.

Match days and getting around them

Living this close to the Principality Stadium has obvious upsides, but it does mean match days and concerts bring road closures and crowds that can complicate a straightforward journey into the city centre. If your appointment falls on a fixture day, walking via Fitzhamon Embankment is usually more reliable than driving, since much of the immediate stadium area becomes pedestrianised or restricted on event days.
