Cardiff Bay's population has grown enormously as the apartment developments around Roath Basin and the waterfront have filled up, but that growth has mostly been residential and commercial rather than bringing much new dental provision with it. What there is, instead, is an unusually easy train link. The Bay line runs a shuttle service between Cardiff Bay station and Cardiff Queen Street every few minutes at peak times, and Queen Street sits right by St David's Centre. For a lot of our Bay patients, getting to Luna Dental is genuinely no harder than getting to the Senedd or Mermaid Quay from home — it's the same short hop, just in the other direction.

Getting here from Cardiff Bay

From the Bay, the most direct route into town runs up Lloyd George Avenue and onto Bute Street, joining Callaghan Square before threading through to Queen Street via Custom House Street or Bridge Street. It's a short distance on paper, but the mix of pedestrian crossings, cyclists and one-way sections through this part of Cardiff means driving rarely feels quicker than the alternatives.

There's no free parking at the practice itself, since we're on Queen Street in the heart of the city centre — the Q-Park on Bute Terrace or the St David's Centre car park are the nearest options, both a short walk from the door. Given the parking costs already familiar to anyone living in the Bay's newer developments, most residents find it isn't much different from what they're used to at home.

Allow around 11 minutes door to door outside rush hour, more if there's an event on at the Wales Millennium Centre or a match at the Principality Stadium pulling extra traffic through the same streets.

By train, bus or bike

The Bay line is by far the easiest way to reach us — trains run directly between Cardiff Bay station and Cardiff Queen Street, a journey of only a few minutes, and Queen Street sits a two-minute walk from St David's Centre. A lot of our Bay patients treat an appointment as a genuine two-stop errand: hop on at the Bay, off at Queen Street, straight up to Boots.

Buses running along Lloyd George Avenue and Bute Street also connect the Bay to the city centre, useful if you're closer to the Techniquest or Norwegian Church end of the waterfront than the station itself. Nextbike docks are dotted around the Bay and the barrage too, and a fair number of patients cycle up along the route past Callaghan Square on a dry evening.

For patients who've had sedation or a numb jaw after treatment, the train is often the sensible option regardless of how you got here in the first place — it's a short, low-effort journey home either way.

Most Bay dental patients we see have simply accepted that a short trip up into town is part of living somewhere this specific.

The upside is that the Bay line makes that trip almost trivial compared with most short journeys across Cardiff — a few minutes on a direct train beats fighting traffic to reach a suburban practice on the far side of the city.
